Spot a scam in 5 signs
Fake online job offers mostly target beginners. A few reflexes are enough to spot them before losing money or personal data.
Warning signs
- You are asked to pay to work: sign-up fee, starter kit, mandatory training, "deposit".
- Someone contacts you on WhatsApp or Telegram before any contract or outside the platform.
- You are promised unrealistic earnings with no skills: 50,000 FCFA per day, €2,000 per month from the start.
- You are asked to invest or recruit other people: that is a pyramid scheme, not a job.
- Payment goes through gift cards or crypto you have to buy, or through an "account to unlock".
Checks before signing up anywhere
- The exact site address (copies add a letter or change the extension); use a known link.
- The "accepted countries" and "payment methods" pages before creating your account.
- The withdrawal threshold and the time to first payment.
- Recent reviews on Trustpilot or in independent groups, not only on the site itself.
- A serious client deposits the money on the platform before you start (Freelancer: "milestone", Upwork: "escrow").
The right reflex
Never use a VPN to get around a country restriction: account closed and earnings lost.
